The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) says it has intensified awareness on safety of the airspace transport system.
National President of NUATE, Mr Ben Nnabue, said this in Owerri on Wednesday, at a two day workshop on Conflict Resolution and Restorative Justice for the aviation sector organised by Jayson Terrel and Associates Ltd.
Nnabue, who is also the Chairman of the International Transport Workers Federation, urged the association’s members to utilize alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in resolution of conflicts at the workplace.
Speaking on the theme: “ Aviation Workers the Cornerstone of Safe and Secure Skies”, Nnabue said that ADR methods would contribute to workspace safety and further leave a positive impact on the aviation sector.
He said that the choice of Imo for the event was to commend the state Governor Sen. Hope Uzodimma for his transformative initiative at Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri which resulted in the airport’s first international flight in May 2024.
Mr Magnus Orjiakor, of the organising team, pointed out that restorative justice aims to promote sustainable peace by building stronger relationships between the government and workers.
Earlier in an opening address, Prof. Philip Ogbonna of the Imo State University disclosed that mapping was the first process in conflict resolution to explore solutions and determine the cause of conflict.
Also, Dr. Walter Emereole of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umuahia who spoke on the impact of clear communication in labour relations charged participants to readily identify communication gaps in their work spheres for sustainable co-rrelations.
Also speaking , Mr Ochem Aba of NUATE urged participants at the workshop to take advantage of the awareness campaign for the security of both the workspace and the industry.
Amb. Anthony Akalugo, of Leadership Sustainable Development Academy Ltd, described the role of workers in the sustainability of the aviation industry as essential for the interconnectivity, equipment, regulatory compliance and organizational practices.
