Dear NBA President,
Thank you for fighting for Comfort. Although Comfort was unruly, Ibom Air abused her dignity as a human person. Both Comfort and the staff of Ibom Air will benefit from a class on civility. I can teach that class pro bono.
But I want to bring to your attention that there are thousands of Nigerians who are abused everyday by the Nigerian law enforcement officers, in Nigerian courts, detention and correction facilities.
Some Nigerian police and military officers exploit and abuse poor Nigerians on our roads daily.
Some of them beat poor Nigerian youths and seize their properties. I wonder why NBA has remained silent about this. It may be good for the NBA to take up some of these cases pro bono.
Go to our detention centres. Many poor Nigerians are abused daily in those facilities. Like Comfort, they are dragged around daily. Many have nothing to wear, nothing to eat and no bed to sleep on. Yet they have not been found guilty of any crime. Many stay in these centres for months and years without trial. Can’t the NBA speak up for them? Can’t the NBA represent some of them pro bono?
Go to our courts. Some cases have lingered for years. The judges keep adjourning cases for meaningless technical reasons. Can’t the NBA demand accountability from the courts? Can’t the NBA speak up against the frustrating length of time it takes the courts to decide cases involving the poor?
There are many poor Nigerians abused daily at police check points, in detention and correction centres.
Dear NBA President,
Don’t go back to your chamber waiting for another drama. What Comfort suffered is nothing compared to what some innocent Nigerians are going through at police check points, in detention and correction centres.
Please speak up for these Nigerians as you just did for Comfort.
