Community Leader Says Women Empowerment Catalyst to National Development 

President-General of the Nzuko Ndom Amakohia, a socio-cultural group, Mrs Sylvia Ajuruchi, has described women empowerment as a catalyst for national development. 

Ajuruchi, a nurse intensivist said this at the 2025 August Meeting organised by Amakohia women in Amakohia-Uratta, Owerri, on Wednesday. 

Ajuruchi spoke on the theme: “ Women Empowerment: A Stepping Stone To A Greater Tomorrow “. 

She said that the annual August Meeting is anchored on promotion of women as unifiers of their families and supporters of their husbands in community and national development. 

She added that it is an opportunity to celebrate the strength, resilience and contributions of women in society and called on women to create opportunities, challenge stereotypes and promote a culture of empowerment. 

She further said that through empowerment initiatives, the full potentials of women can be unlocked, to foster a brighter future. 

 “ As part of our women empowerment initiatives, we have established a thrift and revolving loan scheme and procured additional canopies for revenue generation. 

 “ When a woman is well empowered, a generation is empowered “, she said. 

She thanked the state Governor, Hope Uzodimma, for supporting Amakohia town and urged youths of the area to take advantage of their proximity to the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education to self empower. 

Also speaking, a former Women President of the community, Mrs Scholarstica Manufor said that through the efforts of the women, a health Centre was built in the community and several women empowered with soft loans. 

A highlight of the event was the presentation of meritorious awards to illustrious sons of the community for their meaningful contributions to development and the recognition of older women who have served the community relentlessly. 

Our correspondent reports that among those present at the event were the traditional ruler of Amakohia Uratta Autonomous Community, Eze B.C. Chibundu and his wife, as well as the community’s President-General, Chief Tony Agumadu.
