The race for glory begins in earnest this July as the inaugural Imo Unity Cup 2026 bursts into life, bringing together eight tertiary institutions in a football spectacle designed to showcase talent, inspire ambition and strengthen unity across campuses in Imo State.
Backed by global fintech company, OneDosh, the competition will get underway on Wednesday, July 1, at the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education Mini Stadium, where the opening whistle will signal the start of a tournament many believe could redefine inter-campus football in the state.
While silverware and prize money remain firmly in sight, organisers insist the competition represents much more than a battle for trophies.
The Imo Unity Cup was conceived as a platform to discover hidden talents, create opportunities for young footballers and provide aspiring players with the visibility needed to pursue careers beyond the campus game.
For OneDosh, the partnership reflects a wider commitment to opening doors and creating opportunities for young people beyond the world of finance.
Speaking on the company’s involvement, Cindi Oba explained that supporting youth development through sports aligns perfectly with the company’s philosophy of innovation with impact.
According to her, OneDosh is simplifying cross-border transactions through digital financial solutions that enable users to send, spend and convert money seamlessly across borders, adding that investing in sports is another way of empowering young people to pursue bigger dreams and brighter futures.
Tournament Coordinator, Ugochukwu Ebonine, described the championship as a timely intervention aimed at unlocking the enormous football potential scattered across tertiary institutions in the state.
He expressed confidence that beyond producing memorable contests and fierce rivalries, the competition would serve as a launch pad for players with ambitions of advancing to higher levels of the game.
Ebonine also acknowledged the support of the Imo State Ministry of Sports and the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Obinna Onyeocha, for their contributions towards bringing the championship to reality.
The tournament will feature teams from Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Imo State University, Federal University of Technology Owerri, Imo State Polytechnic, Federal Polytechnic
Nekede, University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University and Federal College of Land Resources Technology, all eager to etch their names into history as the competition’s first champions.
Host institution Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education will have the honour of raising the curtain on the tournament when they face the University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences in the opening fixture at 2:00 p.m. on July 1.
The action continues on July 2 with Imo State University squaring off against Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University, before Federal University of Technology Owerri locks horns with Imo State Polytechnic on July 3.
The final quarter-final pairing will see the Federal College of Land Resources Technology battle Federal Polytechnic Nekede on July 4 for a place in the last four.
Victors from the opening round will advance to the semi-finals as the road to the final gathers momentum before culminating in the grand finale scheduled for July 24 at the iconic Dan Anyiam Stadium.
The stakes are high both on and off the pitch. The eventual champions will pocket ₦1 million, while the runners-up and third-placed teams will receive ₦750,000 and ₦500,000 respectively.
Individual brilliance will also command attention, with cash prizes of ₦100,000 each set aside for the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Highest Goal Scorer and Best Goalkeeper.
As anticipation builds across campuses and supporters begin to rally behind their institutions, the Imo Unity Cup is shaping up to be more than a football competition.
It is a meeting point for ambition, opportunity and youthful excellence, with organisers hoping the tournament becomes a lasting legacy for talent development and a new benchmark for tertiary sports in Imo State.
