Empowering Ethical Education: CSAAE Shines at the ‘Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL)’ Boot Camp 2025

As part of CSAAE’s ongoing commitment to driving ethical transformation in education, the CSAAE participated in the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) Boot Camp 2025.

Represented by the Centre’s Primary Education Cordinator, Blessing Bodunde, the  intensive, hands-on training, held in Abuja, the Nation’s capital, was designed to equip educators and development professionals with innovative tools to combat learning poverty in Nigeria using the proven TaRL methodology.

Interestingly, the Boot Camp structure was deeply aligned with CSAAE’s pillars of Awareness, Advocacy, and Ethics, with participants immersed in practical sessions focused on ethical classroom management, values-driven instruction, and inclusive assessment strategies.

At the heart of the training was a commitment to equity in learning evaluation. Among the areas explored were non-discriminatory assessment methods applied before, during, and after instruction, and ethical data collection and management, especially for vulnerable learners, as well as grouping techniques through the L2F2 (Listening Learning from Familiar to Formal) framework.

Emphasis was placed on incorporation of local languages into assessments and ethical approaches to numeracy testing to ensure fairness.

The Boot Camp highlighted the importance of culturally grounded and ethical instruction: Use of locally relevant numeracy tools to enhance learner engagement.

Also, Literacy strategies tailored to community contexts and learner backgrounds; Ethical deployment of teaching aids to foster inclusiveness and promotion of judgment-free classrooms where every student can thrive.

Managing diversity with dignity and fairness was another focal point. Key strategies included respectful ability grouping without stigmatization, ensuring equal participation opportunities for every learner and transparent, ethical monitoring of learning progress.

Notably, the TaRL Boot Camp reinforced CSAAE’s mission by: enhancing awareness of learning gaps and disparities, offering advocacy tools to influence educational policies and systems and promoting ethically grounded teaching practices at all levels.

Based on the training, the following recommendations are proposed for organizational implementation:

Awareness: Embed Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) principles into CSAAE’s Youth Development Programs and implement TaRL methodologies in schools to enhance foundational learning outcomes.

Advocacy: Promote the adoption of TaRL in marginalized communities through policy engagement.

Ethics: Develop a comprehensive Code of Conduct for ethical TaRL implementation.

Capacity Building: Facilitate training for CSAAE staff, teachers, and schools on ethical assessment and classroom practices, including the implementation of the TaRL methodology.

In conclusion, the 2025 TaRL Boot Camp has empowered CSAAE with transformative educational tools grounded in ethics and equity.

These insights will not only enrich our internal programs but also strengthen our advocacy for inclusive, systemic educational reform across Nigeria.

As we integrate these principles into our work, we remain dedicated to building a more ethical and equitable society through education.
