Optiviva Eye and Opticals, an Owerri-based clinic, has provided free eye screenings for two weeks to mark the 2025 World Sight Day, raising awareness about the importance of vision care.
Dr Osinachi Nwachukwu, Head Optometrist at the clinic, disclosed this during an interaction with journalists on Thursday in Owerri, calling for greater attention to eye health across communities.
Our correspondent reports that World Sight Day is observed annually on the second Thursday of October to promote eye health and prevent avoidable blindness globally.
The 2025 theme, “Love Your Sight: Vision for All,” emphasises that good vision is not a privilege but a right that everyone, regardless of status or age, should enjoy.
Nwachukwu said the programme aligned with Optiviva’s mission to provide high-quality, affordable, and compassionate eye care that improved lives and ensured no one was held back by poor vision.
She noted that the free screenings began Thursday, Oct. 2, and would continue until Oct. 15, with the aim of reaching underserved communities and spreading awareness on vision health.
“Our eyes shape how we experience life, yet many wait until there’s a problem before seeking help. Regular eye checks can prevent serious issues.
“At Optiviva, we witness how something as simple as an eye test can transform lives, from improving a child’s learning to restoring independence for an elderly person,” she added.
She advised people to take small but meaningful steps: wear prescribed glasses, eat eye-friendly foods, reduce screen time, and seek early professional help when vision changes are noticed.
Nwachukwu reiterated the clinic’s commitment to offering accessible eye care, organising community screenings, and educating people about protecting and prioritising their sight in everyday life.
She urged Imo residents and Nigerians nationwide to get their eyes tested regularly and encouraged friends and family to prioritise vision care as part of general health awareness.
