In a bid to address the growing problem of food insecurity worsened by inflation and economic recession, the Imo State House of Assembly has called on Governor Hope Uzodimma to take immediate action in boosting agricultural productivity in the State.
The lawmakers urged the Governor to direct the Commissioner of Agriculture to urgently source and distribute improved, high-yield seedlings to farmers in preparation for a bountiful harvest this year.
This resolution followed a motion sponsored by Chief Kennedy Ibe, the representative of Obowo Constituency, and co-sponsored by six other Legislators.
During the debate on the motion, Ibe stressed that deliberate efforts to provide farmers with high-yield seedlings would significantly improve crop production, reduce the cost of food, and enhance the standard of living in Imo.
He noted that with the rainy season approaching, now is the crucial time to act before farming activities begin in full swing.
“The problem of food shortage and insecurity cannot be overturned without a proactive approach. The rains are setting in, signaling the start of the farming season. The government must demonstrate empathy by ensuring farmers have access to the best seedlings for optimal yield,” Ibe stated.
The motion received overwhelming support from lawmakers and was passed without opposition.
The House acknowledged the efforts of the Uzodimma-led administration in promoting sustainable agricultural development but emphasized the need for urgent intervention to prevent further hardship.
While the Lawmakers’ Resolution is a welcome step, questions remain about its implementation. Will the Government act swiftly to ensure farmers get these high-yield seedlings on time? How accessible will these seedlings be to local farmers, particularly in rural areas?
With food prices soaring and many households struggling to afford basic meals, residents will be watching closely to see if this initiative translates into real relief. What are your thoughts? Will this move truly address food insecurity in Imo State.
