Imo Assembly calls for immediate rehabilitation of dilapidated roads in Onuimo LGA

The Imo House of Assembly has urged Gov. Hope Uzodimma to direct the immediate rehabilitation of dilapidated roads in Onuimo Local Government Area.

The house made the call during its plenary on Wednesday following a motion moved by the member representing Onuimo, Mr James Esile (APC-Onuimo) and seconded by Mr Chigozie Nwaneri (APC-Oru East).

Presenting the motion, Esile commended the state governor for the construction and rehabilitation of more than 200 roads across the 27 local government areas of the state.

He also noted that the governor had invested so much in road construction and rehabilitation as seen on MCC, Relief market, Owerri/ Orlu road, Owerri/Okigwe road, Owerri/Mbaise/Obowo road, Orlu/Mgbee road, among others.

He, however, observed that about ten major connecting roads in his local government area had become dilapidated to the extent that the members of the communities have no access to their farms and business premises.

The affected roads are Ezelu junction, Eziama-Umucheke-Umuogbuanu-Ndiuche road,

Ndikpa-Okpoala-Abo, Okohai-Umuichiribe, Owerri-Okwe, Afor-Umuna junction road, Umuomaa-Umuokpare-lkpe road, Umuogbuanu-Umuokparaehie, Nkwo- Umucheke and Okai-lkpem road.

The lawmaker said that Uzodimma had shown capacity and demonstrated his administration’s desire to construct quality road infrastructure across the state.

But he, however, expressed worry that if immediate action is not taken, his area might be erased from the socio-economic, political and infrastructural development plans in the state.

The lawmaker, therefore, urged the house to appeal to the governor to direct the Ministry of Works, Imo Roads Maintenance Agency and other related agencies, to take immediate actions to construct and rehabilitate the affected roads.

Supporting the motion, Mr Clinton Amadi (LP-Owerri Municipal), appealed to the governor to look into the plight of the Onuimo Local Government Area.

He noted that a greater part of the local government area was affected by the problem, adding that their inability to transport their farm produce to other parts of the state would compound the problem of food insecurity in the state.

Also supporting the motion, the Ideato North representative, Mr Okechukwu Udeze (APC), noted that the affected roads cut across several communities and should be worked on as soon as possible.

In his contribution, Mr Kelechi Ofurum (APC-Owerri North), appealed to the governor to direct the immediate repair of the affected areas as well as dilapidated roads in Emekuku, Owerri North local government area.

The Speaker directed the Clerk to convey the resolution of the house to the office of the governor following a unanimous vote in favour of the motion.
