The Imo State House of Assembly has showered praise on Governor Hope Uzodimma for approving and kickstarting the construction of the Umuaka-Umundugba-Isunjaba-Eziama Obire-Mgbaboano Road, a vital infrastructure project aimed at boosting connectivity in rural communities.
Lawmakers described the move as a game-changer during a recent plenary session, highlighting how the road will link several agrarian communities across Njaba and Ngor Okpala local government areas.
This 25-kilometer stretch promises to ease transportation woes for farmers, traders, and residents long plagued by dilapidated routes.
Speaker Chike Onyejimbe led the commendation, noting the project’s alignment with Uzodimma’s “3R” agenda of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Recovery.
“This approval demonstrates the governor’s commitment to equitable development, bringing relief to our people in the heart of Imo State,” Onyejimbe stated, urging swift completion to maximize economic gains.
The road’s construction, already underway, addresses chronic issues like flooding and poor drainage that have isolated Umuaka and surrounding villages.
Local leaders report that heavy machinery has mobilized, with earthworks progressing steadily despite the rainy season challenges.
Residents in Umuaka, a bustling market town, expressed delight over the development.
“For years, we struggled to transport yam, cassava, and palm produce to urban markets; this road will transform our livelihoods,” said Chief Oliver Okoro, a community elder and farmer.
Assembly members from the affected zones, including those representing Njaba and Isu, emphasized the project’s multiplier effects.
It will not only cut travel time to Owerri but also spur agro-processing, small businesses, and access to healthcare and schools, reducing urban migration pressures.
Governor Uzodimma’s administration has prioritized such rural roads as part of a broader infrastructure blitz, including the ongoing Oguta Lake dredging and airport expansion.
Officials say the project, funded through state resources and strategic partnerships, targets completion within 2026.
This commendation reflects growing legislative support for Uzodimma’s governance ahead of the 2027 elections, with lawmakers pledging oversight to ensure quality and timely delivery.
The assembly also called for similar interventions in other underserved areas.
