The Imo House of Assembly on Thursday passed the Imo Film Village Establishment Bill into Law.
The bill, sponsored by the member representing Onuimo state constituency, Mr James Esile (APC), was passed following deliberations of the Committee of the Whole House.
After the third reading, the Speaker, Mr Chike Olemgbe (Ihitte Uboma), directed the Clerk to send a clean copy of the bill to the Office of the Governor for his assent.
Esile, who spoke to journalists after the plenary, said that the film village which would be established in Umucheke Okwe in Onuimo Local Government Area would provide employment and new streams of income for the state.
He described the tourism and entertainment industry as one of the biggest non-oil economies that other states of the federation have benefitted from, adding that the film village would enable Imo to key in.
He said it would also bring the state to limelight, boost commerce and enable its speedy development.
The lawmaker added that the village would facilitate certified courses in film making to ensure that qualified film makers were produced.
