Priority Needs for Primary Schools In Imo State 

The priority needs for primary schools in Imo State include several critical infrastructure and facility improvements. These include: 

  • Laboratories: Most primary schools lack science laboratories and science resource corners, which are essential for practical teaching and learning of science subjects. Only a very small percentage have any form of science facility. 
  • Toilets: Toilet facilities are severely inadequate, with only a few schools having functional toilets. The federal guideline is one toilet per 25 pupils, a standard far from being met in most schools. Sanitation is a major concern that impacts hygiene and health. 
  • Desks: Insufficient desks and furniture are a common problem, leading to overcrowding and pupils sharing seats or sitting on windowsills. Adequate seating and desks are fundamental for a conducive learning environment. 
  • Water Supply: Regular and good water supply is scarce in most schools, with some relying on rainwater harvesting. This impairs sanitation and hygiene practices. 
  • Libraries and Teaching Resources: Very few schools have functional libraries and adequate instructional materials, which are necessary to support literacy development. 
  • Electricity and Communication: Most schools lack electricity and communication facilities, limiting use of technology in education. 

In summary, laboratories, toilets, desks, water supply, libraries, and electricity rank as priority infrastructure needs to effectively support teaching, learning, and hygiene in Imo State’s primary schools.
