The Imo State Health Insurance Scheme and Its Legal Perspectives

The Imo State Health Insurance is an offshoot of the National Health Insurance Scheme.

It is an initiative of the Government aimed at ensuring that residents of the state have easy access to effective, quality and affordable health services.

It also serves to protect residents from financial risks and hardship of huge medical bills.

Over the years, however, many residents of the state have, sadly, been unable to access this provision owing largely to a lack of adequate sensitisation and public awareness.

C- Advocate therefore wishes to enlighten Imo people on the gains of the scheme.

Worthy of note is the fact that Section 12, Number One of the Imo State Health Insurance Law describes the scheme as “compulsory “ and applying to all residents.

These beneficiaries include the general public, all employers and employees in the public and organized private sector as well as firms with five staff and above.

Others are informal sector employees and all vulnerable persons in the state.

Section 12 Number Two of the Law also states that the scheme shall comprise “mandatory public health insurance scheme for all and voluntary (private) health insurance plans which may be purchased by residents to complement or supplement the mandatory public health insurance scheme “.

Contributions to the scheme are derived from an employer, employees and equity contribution of not less than one per cent of the consolidated revenue of Imo state.

C-Advocate therefore calls on Imo people to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure access to quality healthcare for all. Health is wealth and healthcare is a priority.
