President Bola Tinubu has rewarded Nigeria’s victorious Super Falcons with an impressive package following their historic triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The rewards include 3-bedroom houses, a cash award of $100,000 to each player, and national honours, specifically the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), one of Nigeria’s highest national accolades.
This ceremony was held at the State House in Abuja, with the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, among the dignitaries present.
In addition to the players, the team’s technical crew were also recognized for their role in the remarkable comeback victory where the Falcons overturned a two-goal deficit to defeat Morocco 3-2 in the final.
Each member of the technical team received apartments and a cash reward of $50,000, highlighting the administration’s appreciation of tactical brilliance in achieving the country’s 10th continental title, which was dubbed #MissionX.
Beyond the gifts, Tinubu authorized the full payment of all outstanding allowances and match bonuses to the Super Falcons ahead of the final, ensuring their focus was undistracted and motivated during the crucial match against Morocco.
This action was highly praised as it eliminated any financial distractions and showed strong government support for women’s football.
The President lauded the team’s resilience and the spirit they lifted in the nation, emphasizing that their victory proved the unstoppable nature of Nigeria when united.
Tinubu noted that their skill, teamwork, and determination honored the country and inspired a new generation of young Nigerians, sending a strong message about female empowerment and sports excellence in Nigeria.
The First Lady, Sen. Remi Tinubu, joined in congratulating the team, celebrating their achievement and highlighting the significance of their success in promoting women’s sports nationally.
She emphasized how the Super Falcons’ victory could galvanize increased attention and investment in women’s football and sports infrastructure.
