The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) South East Zone expressed profound sadness and shock over the news. In a press release signed by Vice President Ikemefuna Asika and Zonal Secretary Kennedy Onwunali, the group described Chukwu as a consummate professional whose dedication, integrity, and love for sports journalism set him apart as one of the industry’s finest.

Chukwu’s remarkable service extended to both Enyimba International FC and Heartland FC, where he played pivotal roles in enhancing media coverage. His contributions significantly boosted the visibility of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and continental competitions under the Confederation of African Football (CAF), earning admiration from colleagues, administrators, players, and fans nationwide.

SWAN South East Zone stood in solidarity with the Chukwu family, extending heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, friends, and all touched by his humility, warmth, and exemplary professionalism. They highlighted how his storytelling and unwavering commitment enriched football reportage, making him a pillar not just in sports journalism but across regional lines.

Meanwhile, the SWAN Imo State Chapter issued a poignant tribute, calling Chukwu’s passing a devastating blow to the sporting community in Imo State and beyond. The statement, signed by Secretary Tunde Liadi, noted that until his death, Chukwu remained a respected figure known for his diligence, competence, and deep understanding of football operations.

As former Media Officer for Enyimba FC and later Protocol and Licensing Officer at Heartland FC, Chukwu distinguished himself through outstanding media relations and club administration. His work left lasting impressions on stakeholders across Nigeria’s football landscape, blending journalism with administrative excellence.

Imo SWAN Chairman, Mr. Cosmos Chukwuemeka, reacted strongly to the loss, describing Chukwu as a committed journalist and sports administrator who embodied excellence. “The death of Tonnex Chukwu is a devastating blow to the sports writing fraternity in Imo State and the entire Nigerian football community,” Chukwuemeka stated. “He was a thorough professional, a dependable colleague, and a passionate advocate for the growth of sports.”
