Driver, Security Guard Escape Boss’s Abduction in Imo

A dramatic kidnap attempt targeting a prominent business owner in Orogwe, Owerri North Local Government Area, Imo State, on Tuesday night ended in failure after his driver and security officer fiercely resisted the armed assailants, forcing the criminals to flee empty‑handed.

The incident, which occurred along a rural stretch near the Owerri–Umuguma road axis, has thrown renewed light on the creeping insecurity affecting even ostensibly “safer” residential enclaves in the Owerri metropolis.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke to our correspondent, the targeted businessman, a well‑known fuel marketer who operates a depot in the Owerri area, was returning home from an evening engagement in the city when his vehicle was flanked by a grey Camry bearing no licence plate.

The car, reportedly driven by two men, abruptly blocked the businessman’s SUV near a bend in Orogwe, while four other gunmen, some brandishing AK‑type rifles and others holding cutlasses, emerged from the surrounding thickets.

The men ordered the driver to pull over and threatened to kill everyone in the vehicle if the occupants did not comply.

The driver, Emmanuel Okorie, 42, and the security officer, who preferred to be identified as “Uche,” immediately refused to open the doors, instead engaging the attackers in a brief but violent physical struggle that spilled onto the road.

The driver reversed sharply, ramming one of the Camry’s doors, which caused confusion among the kidnappers and allowed the security officer to draw a licensed pistol and fire warning shots into the air.

The gunfire, which was heard by nearby residents, reportedly triggered a stampede as the kidnappers scrambled back into their vehicle and sped off toward the dense bush surrounding the Owerri Industrial Layout.

Residents of Orogwe, who had earlier grouped at the junction to complain about what they described as a recent spate of “daytime robberies” along the route, later gathered at the scene and commended the quick thinking of the driver and security officer.

Community leaders told our reporter that the road had become a favourite ambush route for criminals exploiting the cover of shrubs and the lack of consistent street lighting.

“We have been asking the police to deploy more patrols here, but we are glad that this time the victim’s team did not fold their hands,” one elder, who asked not to be named, said.

The Owerri North Divisional Police has confirmed the incident but declined to give full details, citing an ongoing investigation.

However, an officer familiar with the case told our correspondent that operatives are screening callers, neighbouring communities, and known criminal networks in Owerri West and Owerri North to trace the kidnappers and their associates.

The police also said that the targeted businessman has since been placed under low‑profile security, while calls are mounting from residents and civil‑society groups for the state command to reopen the Owerri Anti‑Kidnapping Unit and expand its presence in the city’s suburbs.

For now, the aborted abduction in Orogwe stands as a grim reminder that even middle‑class professionals are no longer immune to the expanding tentacles of armed crime in Imo State.
