Imo State University (IMSU) clinched the title and a N1 million prize after winning the inaugural OneDosh Imo State Unity Cup.
The final, played Sunday at Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, ended 3-2 in favour of IMSU over Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education (AIFUE).
AIFUE received N750,000 as runners-up, while the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) collected N500,000 for third place.
Governor Hope Uzodinma, represented at the event by Deputy Governor Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, praised the participating institutions for their sportsmanship and lauded the organisers for successfully staging the maiden tournament.
The governor was presented with an award on behalf of the state by the Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha.
Addressing the crowd after the match, the governor thanked the schools for their spirited display and encouraged continued positive engagement of youth through sports.
He singled out AIFUE for mounting a strong comeback to score two goals, urging them not to be disheartened and congratulated IMSU on their victory.
Engineer Ugochukwu Obinna Egbunine, the tournament organiser, described the maiden edition as both challenging and rewarding.
He gave thanks for overcoming difficulties and said the turnout demonstrated that the competition’s goals are sustainable.
“Seeing students from different schools unite to enjoy the beautiful game shows the Unity Cup’s aim was achieved,” he said.
Cindy Oba, representing sponsor OneDosh Global Finance App, expressed delight at the event’s outcome and the enthusiasm it generated.
Oba noted that the competition’s reception by students and the state affirmed OneDosh’s objectives of promoting unity, sportsmanship and healthy rivalry among Imo’s tertiary institutions.
