Eid-el-Kabir: Food, Transport Costs Soar in Imo

As Muslim faithful mark Eid-el-Kabir, food and transport costs have soared in Imo.

C- Advocate correspondent who went round Owerri, the state capital reports that staple food prices have significantly surged.

For example, a 50kg bag of rice costs between N110,000 and N120,000, tomatoes (a basket) around N18,000, and yam tubers between N6,000 and N8,000.

Prices of essential food items such as onions, yam, groundnut oil, and vegetables have risen sharply compared to the previous year, with some items nearly doubling in price in the major markets of Douglas, Relief and Worldbank.

The high food prices have dampened Eid el-Kabir celebrations, with many families in Imo struggling to afford traditional festive foods and sacrificial rams.

According to a recent survey Imo is currently among the most expensive states in Nigeria, with a food inflation rate of about 29.0% as of early 2025, indicating a significant rise in food prices.

Transport fares have increased significantly too, with major companies along the Egbert road experiencing a 20 per cent hike during the period.

Meanwhile, Gov. Hope Uzodimma, in a message on his official Facebook handle on Friday, felicitated with muslim faithful in Imo and wished them renewed hope, abundant blessings, and divine guidance.

“As our Muslim brothers and sisters in Imo State and across Nigeria celebrate Eid-al-Adha, I extend my heartfelt felicitations and warm wishes.

“Your steadfast devotion and commitment to the values of Islam have contributed immensely to the moral and spiritual fabric of our society. I urge you to continue spreading the essence of Eid, particularly to the less privileged”, he said.
