NBA Seals Imo High Court Over Fear of Complex Collapse

The chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Owerri, Mr Chris Ihentuge, on Friday, announced the immediate suspension of court sittings at the Imo State High Court complex located in Owerri, the state capital.

The Owerri NBA chairman made the announcement when he addressed lawyers and litigants at the premises of the complex in Owerri on Friday.

This is contained in a statement by Mr Franklin Amandi, the Publicity Secretary of the Owerri branch of the NBA, made available to newsmen in Owerri, on Friday.

Amandi disclosed that the sealing of the complex was as a result of its structural defects.

According to him, the Chairman of the NBA, Owerri branch; Chief Chris Ihentuge, Esq., addressed a cross section of lawyers at the Justice Oputa High Court complex, expressing serious concerns about the integrity of the Justice Orjiakor block of the complex.

It was reported that while a judge was sitting yesterday, the building was vibrating, and the Chief Registrar confirmed that report.

The Chairman decried that a few weeks ago when the Governor had a media programme, he complained about the state of the building, and the Governor confirmed having gotten the report and promised to do something about that immediately, but unfortunately nothing has been done.

“We cannot afford to risk our lives all in a bid to attend to our duties as lawyers “, Ihentuge said.

He called for suspension of sittings in the said block for at least one week and judges sitting at the said block were accordingly informed.

The Chairman of the Bar also seized the opportunity to bitterly lament the vacancy in the office of the Chief Judge of the state for the past three months now, despite several complaints to the state Governor.
