In what appears to be a glimmer of hope for an end to police brutality, a news report by by C-Advocate newspaper has triggered reactions from security stakeholders in Imo state.
On Friday, October 11, 2024, Heads of all security agencies in Imo state convened on the Air orce base, Owerri to address critical security issues in the state.
This followed a report by C-Advocate newspaper on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024 which addressed complaints from the general public about alleged brutality, extortion and other forms of misconduct by security personnel.
Among other things, the security chiefs discussed concerns related to extortion and unprofessional conduct by personnel in the field.
The security chiefs unanimously agreed that serious consequences would be enforced for any security personnel found guilty of such misconduct.
Following C-Advocate’s report and other concerns raised by members of the public, however, the security chiefs have stepped up with the assurance that all such incidents would soon become relegated to the past.
Reacting to the extortion, a civil society organization, the National Youth Alliance, proposed planned protests in parts of Owerri, the Imo state.
This, it said, was to address what it described as “continuous extortion, intimidation and harassment by men of the Nigeria Police Force and the Joint Task Force (JTF) comprising of the Military, police and civil defence “.
C- Advocate therefore hopes that with these steps so far taken, extortion and brutality especially at checkpoints, will be a thing of the past.
