Amuneke’s Heartland Relegated To NNL

Heartland FC of Owerri have been relegated to the Nigeria National League (NNL) after finishing 17th in the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

Despite winning their final match 2-1 against Akwa United at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, their fate was sealed by other results, notably El-Kanemi Warriors’ win over Sunshine Stars, which left Heartland one point short of safety with 48 points.

This marks Heartland’s fourth relegation in the last decade, highlighting a period of struggle for the club. They have previously been relegated in 2016, 2021/22, and another time before this season.

Heartland, once known as Iwuanyanwu Nationale, is a historically successful club with four consecutive NPFL titles from 1987 to 1990 and notable continental runs, including reaching the 2009 CAF Champions League final.

Heartland’s relegation is significant as it came despite a victory on the final day and follows a turbulent season marked by managerial changes and inconsistent performances. Akwa United was also relegated alongside Heartland for the first time in their history this season.

In summary, Heartland FC’s relegation to the NNL reflects a challenging phase for the club, ending their stay in the top flight after a dramatic final day in the 2024/25 NPFL season.
