Daniel Anyiam’s Legacy Honored with Posthumous Nomination for Inaugural Wakawaka Sports Award

The family of the late Daniel Anyiam, Nigeria’s first national football team captain, is overjoyed by his nomination for the inaugural Wakawaka Sports Award, set to take place on June 7, 2025, at City Cruz Hotel Owerri, Imo State.  

This recognition celebrates his pioneering contributions to Nigerian football, including his leadership of the 1949 UK Tourists team and his role as the first indigenous coach of the national team. 

 His son, Nnamdi Dan-Anyiam, has expressed that their father’s legacy continues to open doors for the family decades after his passing, highlighting the enduring impact of his achievements.  

The nomination has stirred a wave of pride and nostalgia among the Anyiam family and the broader Nigerian football community.  

Daniel Anyiam’s influence extended beyond the pitch; he was instrumental in establishing clubs like Enugu Rangers and Spartans FC (now Heartland FC), fostering talent and promoting sports development in Nigeria.  

His dedication to excellence and his pioneering spirit have left an indelible mark on the nation’s sporting history.  The family’s elation over this honor reflects the profound respect and admiration that Daniel Anyiam continues to command within the sports fraternity.
