The Imo State Government, under Governor Hope Uzodinma, has made significant efforts in addressing electricity challenges in the state.
One of the most notable initiatives is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Orashi Electricity Company Limited to ensure power generation, transmission, and distribution across all 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
This agreement, part of the “Light Up Imo Project,” aims to rehabilitate and expand electricity infrastructure to provide steady and reliable power supply.
Gov. Uzodinma has emphasized the importance of electricity for industrialization, job creation, and economic growth.
He noted that consistent power would attract new industries, revitalize existing ones, and improve the ease of doing business.
Additionally, it would restore Imo State’s status as a tourism hub while empowering residents and improving their quality of life.
The government has also initiated legislative backing for its electricity projects through the “Light Up Imo Project Establishment Law,” which is currently awaiting its third reading in the State House of Assembly.
This law seeks to create a robust legal framework for sustainable power infrastructure development across the state.
The project also aligns with federal initiatives like the South East Light Up Project under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Furthermore, Uzodinma announced plans to complete a power-generating plant in Isiala Mbano LGA during his second term.
This initiative builds on the legacy of former Governor Dee Sam Mbakwe and aims to address long-standing gaps in power infrastructure.
The governor has tasked relevant ministries to ensure steady power in urban areas by the end of each year and has committed substantial resources to achieve these goals.
Despite these efforts, however, challenges remain. The government must accelerate project timelines to meet growing energy demands.
Government must move from mere words to actions directly felt by the people.
Rural areas often face delays in accessing electricity compared to urban centers. To address this, the government should prioritize rural electrification projects alongside urban initiatives.
Additionally, Imo State should explore renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power to diversify its energy mix.
Collaborating with private sector partners beyond Orashi Electricity Company could bring innovative solutions and additional funding for large-scale projects.
Transparency in project implementation is crucial. Regular updates on milestones achieved under the “Light Up Imo Project” would build public trust and erode suspicions of corruption in the process.
The government should also establish feedback mechanisms for residents to report electricity-related issue and strengthen transparency in the management of public electricity infrastructure and funds.
Finally, training programs for local technicians and engineers could create a skilled workforce capable of maintaining and expanding the state’s electricity infrastructure.
By combining these measures with ongoing efforts, Imo State can achieve its vision of reliable and sustainable power supply for all residents.
