The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called for the revitalization of zebra crossings across Nigerian roads as a measure to enhance pedestrian safety.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Imo State, Corps Commander Oji Udensi, made the call on Thursday while addressing journalists in Owerri as part of activities marking the United Nations Global Road Safety Week 2025.
This year’s campaign is themed “Streets for Life Make Walking Safe, Make Cycling Safe.”
Commander Udensi emphasized the importance of road markings, particularly zebra crossings, in regulating traffic and safeguarding road users.
He noted that strategic placement of these signs, especially around schools and areas frequented by children would significantly reduce accidents involving school-aged pedestrians.
“With the revitalization of road signs and proper driver education, the frequency of road accidents can be reduced to the barest minimum,” Udensi said.
He urged schools to partner with relevant authorities to install zebra crossings near their premises, stressing that the lives of school children must not be left to chance.
“The road is a shared environment, and everyone has a role to play in ensuring its safety,” he added.
While appreciating government efforts in road construction, particularly in Imo State, Udensi called for the inclusion of pedestrian sidewalks and footbridges where necessary to further reduce risks to pedestrians.
Also speaking, the Imo State Coordinator of the Special Marshals, Dr. Happiness Ikechukwu, commended Udensi for his proactive leadership and reaffirmed the commitment of Special Marshals to supporting his people-centered initiatives.
The Command’s Head of Operations, Deputy Corps Commander Oliver Ukachukwu, described road safety as a collective responsibility. He urged all road users to exercise caution, noting that “life has no duplicate.”
Our correspondent reports that activities lined up for the weeklong Road Safety celebration in Imo State include advocacy visits to selected schools, outreach to orphanages, a special Jumat prayer, and a thanksgiving church service to conclude the event.
